Mycotoxins

The term “mycotoxin” refers to a family of toxic secondary metabolites produced by moulds. While hundreds of mycotoxins exist in nature, only a select few are relevant to the agro-food industry: aflatoxins, deoxynivalenol, fumonisins, ochratoxin, T-2 and HT-2 toxins and zearalenone.

When animals consume feed containing mycotoxins, they not only become ill, but it triggers a domino-effect across the whole livestock industry, whereby contaminated foods of animal origin, such as milk, pose a risk to human health, resulting in large economic losses. These compounds have reportedly been associated with various human and animal diseases and are unfortunately a well-established threat to grains and other commodities.

Mycotoxins concern not only grains, coffee, cocoa, wine and spices, but are also prevalent in the dairy industry, particularly aflatoxin M1. The on-site detection of patulin, a harmful mycotoxin found in fruits and fruit juices is extremely important for juice processors and infant food producers.

Mycotoxin ELISA Kits

We provide a comprehensive portfolio of ELISA test kits that suit all needs for reliable and effective mycotoxin analysis.

Multiple mycotoxin assays can also be run by our automatic analyzers and have been validated for The BOLTTM and ThunderBOLT®, two compact, user-friendly ELISA robots that can create considerable savings.

Aflatoxin Testing in milk with an AOAC PTM: I’screen AFLA M1 Milk ELISA Kit

The I’screen AFLA M1 Milk is a quantitative immunoassay for the analysis of aflatoxin M1. The kit has been granted AOAC Research Institute Performance Tested MethodsSM status (AOAC Certificate No. 072002) for use with raw bovine whole milk, skim milk and powdered milk.

The limit of detection (LOD) is 5 ng/L for liquid milk and 50 ng/L for milk powder. Its sensitivity allows the detection of aflatoxin M1 at concentrations below the regulatory limits set by the European Union. The assay is compliant with the ISO 14675:2003 (IDF 186:2003) guideline. I’screen AFLA M1 Milk Product Page
