Brain Heart Infusion Broth is used to cultivate fastidious organisms, yeasts, molds, aerobes and anaerobes (anaerobe culture is enhanced by the addition of agar to restrict oxygen diffusion). BHI is a nutritious buffered broth that contains infusions of brain and heart tissues, along with peptones, to provide proper nutrients and aid in the growth of fastidious organisms. Sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance. Dextrose provides an adequate carbohydrate source for successful culture. Disodium phosphate acts as a buffering agent to maintain pH stability.
